This master's thesis deals with the project “Expanding the skills of asylum seekers in the SPAR market of Perspektive Handel Caritas gGmbH Wels” and examines how asylum seekers can be integrated into Austrian society linguistically, professionally and socially through their work in retail. The focus is on the question of what challenges arise in the integration process and what strategies are used to overcome them. Based on a comprehensive literature review, in which current labour market data, central concepts and theoretical approaches to integration were considered, the empirical approach was carried out using qualitative methods - including a stakeholder analysis, a social space inspection, a focus group and guided interviews with key players of the project. The results show that, in addition to acquiring skills relevant to the labour market, building social contacts and experiencing self-efficacy play a particularly important role in the integration process. At the same time, structural barriers such as language, legal status and cultural differences are identified as challenges. Overall, the project proves to be an effective instrument for the initial labour market-related integration of asylum seekers. However, the analysis makes it clear that sustainable integration requires clear structural framework conditions and socio-political support over and above individual support. Finally, practical recommendations for comparable projects were formulated.
