In the information age, rapid networking and reacting to messages are normative everyday situations. Phubbing is a behavioral trend that occurs among younger and older cell phone users. According to Klein (2014), interaction partners get ignored and instead their own smartphone is receiving their focus. This has various effects, above all it gives the impression that phubber prefer online communication (p. 335). This master's thesis deals with the behavioral phenomenon of phubbing in mobile, residential and semiresidential child and youth work settings. The aim of the thesis is to investigate in the effects, frequency and motives of excessive smartphone usage of young people in residential groups and families. Based on a comprehensive excerpt of the literature and qualitative interviews, methods of action for social workers in the professional field of stationary or semi-stationary care with children and young people can be derived. Eight conversations were conducted and transcribed in mobile and seven conversations in stationary full-care child and youth welfare facilities. Dealing with phubbing in mobile care is characterized by the absence of boundaries. Different forms of phubbing can be distinguished. In addition, phubbing in youth residential groups has a negative effect on social interaction. Various forms of reaction were recorded among carers. Based on the results, it can be summarized that reactions depend on the respective personal attitude of the carer. Regarding the care goals, phubbing is rated equally negatively, positively and neutrally. Interventions for social work practice and suggestions for action were created after qualitative research and literature review.
