Motivation and problem definition Cyberattacks are a growing threat to companies as networks become increasingly interconnected due to digitalization. These attacks have far-reaching effects on the entire supply chain and can lead to production difficulties, delivery bottlenecks and, as a result, customer dissatisfaction. The medicine supply chain, which ensures the health of the population, and the milk supply chain, which is a key component of the food supply, are particularly important for the Austrian population. The demand for these goods is part of everyday life and underlines their essential role. In order to ensure a secure and continuous supply, protection against cyber-attacks is essential. It is therefore of the utmost importance to strengthen the security of supply chains in a targeted manner and to identify and eliminate potential vulnerabilities. Concrete results The analysis of the supply chains shows that cybersecurity guidelines are still not implemented enough in Austrian companies. Cyber-attacks are not uncommon in Austrian companies and have a corresponding impact on supply chain partners. However, in order to minimize the risk of an attack as much as possible, all players along the supply chain must protect themselves in order to avoid cascading effects. There are enough data interfaces, which is why contracts on cyber security with suppliers is one of the measures that must be implemented. Other measures include raising employee awareness, investing in cyber security measures for a quick and effective response to attacks, regular audits to minimize any vulnerabilities and incident response teams that are specially trained to counteract the problem in the best possible way if an attack occurs. Awareness of cyber-attacks definitely needs to be raised in Austrian companies.
