Abstract

Cross-departmental collaboration in companies is an important factor for the success of organisations. Particularly in areas such as purchasing and supply chain management (SCM), which are closely interlinked and have a significant impact on a company's success. Optimising collaboration in this area can have far-reaching effects and improve an organisation's performance in the long term. This paper aims to provide a solid outlook on how communication and collaboration within an organisation can be improved in a targeted manner in order to gain a competitive advantage. The focus is on the two departments of Purchasing and SCM and the application of the High-Performance Organisation (HPO) and High-Performance Partnership (HPP) frameworks. The main research question is derived from the motivation and problem definition of the thesis: How can the High-Performance Organisation Framework be effectively applied to improve internal communication and collaboration between the Purchasing and SCM departments and what role does the organisational structure play in this? The paper is divided into six parts. After the introduction, the basics of efficient cooperation between purchasing and SCM are defined. The focus here is particularly on the HPO and HPP framework. The following chapter explains the ways in which SCM can be integrated into the organisational structure of a company and the effects of the respective form of integration on the support of the HPO and HPP characteristics. The result is that the Matrix Channel Organisation and the Process Staff Organisation are best suited if the aim is to align with these characteristics. In order to transfer the theoretical results into practice, a single case study is carried out using the purchasing and SCM department of ALDI SÜD HOLDING. Chapter 4 explains the methodological approach, which forms the basis for the further case study. Chapter 5 provides an overview of the organisational integration of the two departments, where it is explained that the SCM department is most likely to be integrated as a functional organisation with a strong focus on logistics activities. The interface-relevant tasks and responsibilities are then explained and the HPO and HPP diagnosis is drawn up in the course of a quantitative analysis. It should be noted that these results are consistent with the theoretical analysis of the functional organisation in Chapter 4, which increases the significance. Finally, recommendations for action are derived based on the results of the quantitative analysis and these are validated with selected employees from the SCM and purchasing departments. The thesis ends with the conclusion, where the research questions are once again answered in a consolidated manner.
