    Abstract

Background: With regard to origin and religious affiliation, nurses in the advanced service for health and nursing are increasingly confronted with residents from other cultures due to multicultural developments in their nursing profession. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire a transcultural perspective in order to promote respectful, non-judgmental care and support, as well as an appreciative coexistence. The nurses in the living homes are confronted not only with residents, but also with employees from other cultural backgrounds. In order to cope with this change, it is important to first identify the challenges of "transcultural care" in order to then address where there is a need for improvement.
Objective: The goal of this master's thesis is to identify the knowledge requirements and the necessary framework for the work processes that are necessary to ensure transcultural care and support in the living homes in Vienna. Based on the findings, a possible recommendation for action for employees in nursing and support can be developed.
Methodology: A qualitative approach was chosen to answer the research questions. Data were collected through two independently conducted focus group interviews. Data were analyzed using Mayring's summary content analysis. Results: In summary, the scientific studies and focus groups reveal many overlaps, particularly with regard to language barriers, cultural differences in care expectations, uncertainties in addressing religious needs, and a lack of training.
Conclusions: This study has highlighted the complexity and multifaceted nature of the demands placed on transcultural care. It became clear that the success of culturally sensitive care depends not only on the competencies of the nurses, but also on a willingness, both societal and institutional, to recognize and promote diversity.
