Statistics show that the proportion of the overall population in Austria who identify as Muslim is steadily increasing. As a result, more and more Muslims are being cared for in healthcare facilities in Austria. The cultural and religious needs of Muslim patients and their relatives can be of particular importance in highly sensitive care situations such as palliative care. Health care workers therefore need to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to approach the other culture in a non-judgemental manner and be open to new approaches. Culturally competent nursing care helps ensure patient satisfaction and positive outcomes. The goal of my master’s thesis is to demonstrate the importance of transcultural competence of healthcare workers in caring for Muslim patients and their relatives in a palliative setting. A qualitative approach was chosen as a methodology. In the context of ten expert interviews, useful results from practice were generated. Transcultural competence is an important key qualification for professional healthcare workers that promotes understanding in transcultural encounters. It enables culturally sensitive care and thereby reduces potential conflicts in everyday practice.
