The right choice of storage technology and method plays an important role for a company. This is particularly essential in the production and storage of long goods such as pipes and profiles. Due to the sizes and lengths of the materials, the storage technologies must fulfill special requirements in order to be able to offer an efficient storage process. voestalpine Krems produces around 1,400 different products with lengths ranging from 1 m to 15 m in the tube plant. These are then transported to the respective main storage halls using conveyor lines, cranes and/or forklifts. Due to many restrictions in the various warehouses, it is currently not possible to store the complete product range in all warehouses, which leads to low warehouse utilization. Furthermore, two automatic crane systems are outdated and will have to be replaced in the near future. This work is therefore dedicated to analyzing the material flow in the pipe factory from the end of production to the storage and retrieval of the products in the storage halls. The material flows are tracked, the exact restrictions of the warehouses in the pipe mill are recorded and current storage problems are identified. In addition, a literature search is carried out to identify technologies and methods for storing long goods. Attention is paid to the advantages and disadvantages of the respective systems, their key figures and possible suppliers. This should provide an overview and show alternative methods of storage. In the final step, a recommendation is made for the company. Possible potential for improvement is identified and evaluated. A cost comparison calculation is used to show the investment costs and running costs that will be incurred over the next few years if the recommended technology is selected. The result of this work should provide voestalpine Krems with assistance in the selection of warehouse technologies and support the decision-making process.
