Abstract

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) has become increasingly important since the early 2000s, particularly as a result of global disruptions such as natural disasters, geopolitical conflicts and pandemics. These events have led to significant disruptions in supply chains worldwide and have focused attention on potential risks along the entire value chain. Despite theoretical progress, many companies find it difficult to effectively operate or implement SCRM and to sustainably manage risks along their supply chain with suitable mitigation measures. This discrepancy between theory and practice forms the starting point of this thesis. The thesis analyses the development of SCRM since the 2000s as well as basic theoretical concepts. Based on this analysis and taking into account the current theoretical status quo, a best-practice solution was derived that combines the central approaches of effective SCRM. In order to validate these theoretical findings and evaluate the status quo in practice, qualitative expert interviews were conducted with experts from companies. The aim was to identify challenges and potentials in the practical implementation of SCRM and to derive specific recommendations for action on this basis. The research results show that SCRM is becoming increasingly important due to advancing globalization, new sustainability regulations and digitalization. While the framework and the underlying process of SCRM have remained largely unchanged, the individual steps of the SCRM process have been significantly expanded in terms of their depth of application. In addition, a standardization of the SCRM process has been established based on the ISO 31000 risk management process in order to promote uniform implementation. Nevertheless, the study identified a discrepancy between theory and practice. Based on the results, recommendations for action with strategic measures for the effective realization or implementation of SCRM were derived. These include the establishment of SCRM as an independent department, the promotion of a risk-conscious corporate culture and the integration of ESG requirements. Modern tools that are supported by AI and risk-based key figures, among other things, can help companies to identify and assess risks along the supply chain more efficiently. In addition, promoting collaboration with key supply chain partners and focusing on preventive strategies are seen as key success factors.
