    Abstract

In Austria, around 25% of the population has a migration background, and forecasts indicate a continued increase in immigration from poorer regions to economically stronger and less populated areas. This demographic shift will also be noticeable in healthcare institutions. This master’s thesis therefore aims to examine the extent to which the 27 clinics of the Lower Austrian Health Agency (NÖ LGA) have structurally anchored measures in place to ensure non-discriminatory healthcare for people with a migration background. A systematic assessment is conducted using a standardized questionnaire from the European “Migrant Friendly Hospital” (MFH) project. The empirical survey is complemented by a comprehensive literature review, which provides the theoretical foundation and highlights the challenges and solutions already being discussed at the international level. The focus of this work lies in analyzing which measures have already been implemented and which further steps are necessary to adequately respond to the increasing migration-related diversity in everyday hospital life. The thesis concludes that culture-sensitive healthcare is not only a matter of equity, but also makes a significant contribution to the quality, efficiency, and humanity of the healthcare system. In doing so, it aims to provide a practice-oriented contribution to the intercultural opening of the Austrian healthcare system.
