Efficient and scalable store delivery is a key success factor in international retail logistics. At dm drogerie markt GmbH, country-specific distribution models differ significantly, resulting in varying levels of performance and cost efficiency. While Austria operates a multi-tiered and tariff-differentiated logistics model that ensures high cost transparency and flexibility, the delivery structure in Italy is based on a centralized approach relying on a single distribution center and one external logistics service provider. This setup limits the realization of economies of scale, increases vulnerability to disruptions, and reduces operational controllability. Against the backdrop of dm’s continued international expansion, there is a clear need to harmonize distribution structures across countries and strategically optimize the selection of transport service providers. The challenge lies in designing a scalable yet flexible system that aligns with both company-wide standards and local market requirements. The aim of this thesis is to identify concrete measures through which dm can improve its tendering processes and transport provider selection to ensure a flexible, scalable, and cost-efficient delivery network. The methodology follows a dual approach: The theoretical part outlines the fundamentals of transport management in retail, including key evaluation criteria such as cost, service quality, flexibility, resilience, and sustainability. It also covers current developments in the digitalization and automation of tendering procedures. The empirical section presents a detailed case study comparing distribution structures and transport tendering practices in Austria and Italy. Special focus is placed on tariff models, operational processes, and contractual arrangements to uncover efficiency gaps and structural limitations. Findings show that the Austrian model offers clear advantages in terms of cost efficiency, route optimization, and scalability. In contrast, the Italian system is marked by limited transparency, restricted flexibility, and a high dependency on a single provider. Based on these insights, several optimization strategies are proposed: transferring proven elements of the Austrian model to other country operations, implementing digital tendering platforms, introducing a standardized evaluation framework for transport partners, and integrating sustainability and resilience metrics into the selection process. Moreover, the use of digital tools such as real-time tracking and automated bidding systems proves to significantly improve the efficiency and quality of the overall procurement process. Ultimately, the thesis demonstrates that a data-driven, strategically grounded approach to selecting and managing transport service providers can substantially enhance dm’s logistics performance enabling better cost control, increased responsiveness, and greater supply chain resilience in a fast-changing retail environment.
