Abstract

The master's thesis ‘Strategies for improving performance in capex project management: an investigation of theory and practice to identify optimisation potential’ examines how theoretical models and practical experience can be combined to increase the efficiency and quality of capex projects. Capex projects are crucial for the operational and innovative capability of companies, whereby inefficiencies can lead to considerable financial losses. Methodologically, a comprehensive literature analysis and expert interviews are conducted in order to formulate practical recommendations for action. The conclusion is that clear objectives, prudent planning, effective resource and risk management as well as comprehensive documentation and project transparency take centre stage. The study identifies the integration of project management software, the optimisation of interface communication and the strengthening of stakeholder management as significant potential for optimisation. The introduction of project management software is recommended in order to centralise project data and improve control. In addition, the continuous training of employees in new technologies and methods is emphasised, bureaucracy is reduced and a supportive corporate culture is promoted. The work provides valuable insights and practice-orientated recommendations for action that are useful for both academic discussion and practical application. One point of criticism is the limited number of expert interviews and the focus on Siemens Energy. Future research should include a broader sample and a more detailed consideration of technical and cultural aspects. To implement the results, it is recommended that project management software be used in pilot projects, a comprehensive change management plan be developed and cost-benefit analyses be carried out. It is also crucial for longterm success to continuously train employees and promote a supportive corporate culture. This master's thesis offers practical recommendations for increasing efficiency in capex project management and optimising production processes.
