Abstract

The motivation for this master's thesis is based on the growing criticism of the fast fashion industry, which is blamed for significant environmental pollution and problematic working conditions in production countries. These issues are often exacerbated by opaque and complex supply chains, making it difficult to define responsibilities and enforce sustainable practices. The fast fashion industry is also under increasing pressure from consumers and regulators to act more sustainably and socially responsibly. Therefore, there is an urgent and necessary need for an in-depth examination of social sustainability and the associated challenges. The structure of this work is divided into three main sections. The introductory part provides an overview of the fast fashion industry, discussing the differences between slow, fast, and ultra-fast fashion and analysing them in the context of other sectors such as pharmaceuticals and the automotive industry. The next section focuses on the social and environmental implications of the fast fashion industry, particularly the impact of working conditions on communities and the environment in production countries like Bangladesh. Additionally, a detailed examination of Corporate Social Responsibility and supply chain laws is undertaken, supplemented by case studies. Methodologically, the first two sections of this work rely primarily on careful research, compilation, and interpretation of relevant literature. The third and final main section brings together the collected insights to formulate recommendations and proposals for improvements aimed at steering the fast fashion industry towards greater sustainability. The main outcome of this work is the development of a well-founded analysis that highlights sustainable solutions that meet social and environmental requirements. The associated potentials and challenges are examined. Based on this in-depth investigation, practical recommendations are formulated to contribute to the realization of a more responsible and sustainable fast fashion industry. Specific measures include the introduction of circular economy models, the implementation of stricter environmental and social standards in the supply chain, and the promotion of recycling initiatives in production countries. These strategies aim to reduce dependency on new raw materials, decrease CO2 emissions, and improve socioeconomic stability in the affected regions. This master's thesis demonstrates that a more sustainable future for the fast fashion industry is possible through a combination of regulatory measures, CSR initiatives, and innovative business models. The proposed approaches could not only mitigate the environmental and social impacts of this sector but also strengthen consumer trust and secure the long-term competitiveness of companies.
