    Abstract

Background: Unplanned extubations in neonatology are a common phenomenon among premature infants in the neonatal setting, which can have negative effects on the child's development. Objective: To identify factors, consequences, measures, and preventive strategies to prevent unplanned extubations. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE and CHINAL databases between the years 20172022, using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: 19 publications were included to answer the research questions. Conclusion: Unplanned extubations are facilitated by many factors in the neonatal setting, which have short- and long-term effects on the child. Preventive, nursing, and medical measures can be implemented to prevent unplanned extubations.
