This master thesis explores the challenges faced by assisted living facilities in Upper Austria in caring for older adults with mental illnesses. The primary focus lies on identifying the specific needs of this group and evaluating how existing care systems address these requirements. The analysis encompasses structural, personnel related, and legal dimensions. Based on theories from gerontopsychiatry and gerontopsychology, the thesis outlines common mental illnesses in old age, their manifestations, and their implications for psychosocial care. A particular emphasis is placed on the Upper Austrian Law of Equal Opportunities (Oö. ChG), which forms the legal foundation for assigning appropriate living and care arrangements to the target group. The empirical part of the study is based on qualitative interviews with professionals from various assisted living settings for people with mental illnesses in Upper Austria. The data was analyzed using Philipp Mayring’s method of qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal that care facilities are increasingly confronted with complex demands, exacerbated by multimorbidity, growing care needs, lack of accessibility, and structural shortages in available housing options.
