    Abstract

A large number of companies fail to utilize their quality management processes optimally, resulting in efficiency losses, reduced quality, and increased costs. Lean Management offers effective methods in this area; however, they are often not implemented consistently. This bachelor’s thesis investigates how the targeted use of lean tools, particularly value stream mapping and the 5S method, can contribute to process optimization. The aim of the work is to highlight both the challenges involved in implementing these tools and their potential. Chapter 1 introduces the problem statement and defines the objective of the study. Chapter 2 provides the theoretical foundation of Lean Management, including its origins, principles, and key concepts such as Muda, Mura, Muri, and Kaizen. Chapters 3 and 4 focus in detail on value stream mapping and the 5S method, with emphasis on their application, structure, and relevance in quality management (QM). Chapter 5 presents three practical case studies that document measurable improvements in industrial environments. These include enhancements in quality, reductions in lead time, and increases in productivity. Moreover, special attention is given to the implementation challenges discussed in Chapter 6. In addition to organizational resistance and lack of know-how, deeper obstacles are identified—such as the absence of an open error culture and the lack of strategic integration of lean practices. Chapter 7 links change management concepts with the implementation of lean tools, as cultural transformation is essential for their long-term success. Finally, Chapter 8 summarizes the key findings of the thesis. It demonstrates that, when applied correctly and strategically embedded, lean tools can make a significant contribution to quality improvement. The combination of theoretical insight, methodological analysis, and practical case-based evaluation provides companies with a solid foundation for optimizing their QM processes in the spirit of a sustainable lean culture.
