Documentation is the "unloved" stepchild of an IT organisation. The reasons given for inadequate IT documentation include a lack of time resources and the complexity of the scope. This research paper focuses mainly on the influences and their effects on IT documentation. Consequently, this research question asks: “How does process documentation improve the quality and efficiency of IT documentation in a manufacturing organisation?” The aim of this bachelor thesis is to answer this question. The introductory chapter deals with the problem, the research question, the objective, and the method used. The age of digital transformation not only influences the handling of IT projects, but also has a profound impact on business models and business processes in a manufacturing company. Technological innovations such as the Internet of Things or artificial intelligence are revealing opportunities for a company's competitiveness and risks in terms of their complexity and handling. In order to be able to model business processes for the digital age, classic business process methods are examined, the documentation of which contains essential information for further IT descriptions. In addition, attention is paid to laws and standards, business-IT-alignment, and synergy effects in document management. After researching external influences in the IT organisation, the legal and business aspects of IT documentation are presented, standard IT methods are introduced, and the use of clear document structuring is explained. This chapter concludes with the use of useful system software and selection of tools and describes an outlook for future documentation trends. This research work is essentially based on the use of monographs, anthologies, and internet research. To ensure the authenticity of the answer to the research question, the use of artificial intelligence has been avoided. The previous chapters have been summarised again in order to answer the research question. Primarily, the structuring of process documentation is seen as an added value for IT documentation, which can offer helpful applications for the organisation and systematisation of documents by means of document management systems. Communication between management and IT organisations is made clearer using processrelated framework documents. Ultimately, process reference models and IT standard methods are used to map standards and guidelines that can provide a competitive advantage for certifications and quality requirements for other companies.
