Due to advancing digitalization and the associated growth in data volumes, companies are facing new challenges in the increasingly complex handling of data. It is becoming more important to create a standardized and reliable database that serves as the basis for well-founded decisions. In this context, data governance provides the structural framework to ensure standardization, transparency and high data quality. The aim is to establish a company-wide understanding of data by determining responsibilities, defining processes and guidelines and using suitable technologies and tools, thereby creating the basis for reliable data-based decision-making. As part of a qualitative literature analysis and a case study, this thesis develops a concept for the introduction of data governance. The focus is on the principles of data management, responsibilities and transparency. In addition to the challenges and benefits, existing frameworks and suitable tools are analyzed. Finally, the qualitative and quantitative added value is shown based on the requirements from the analysis of the current situation. Data quality rules such as consistency, completeness and duplicate checks help to proactively identify errors in the data. The standardization of key figures and the introduction of a group-wide reporting system ensure a consistent database. Transparent data flows and documentation of the origin of data are also important in order to enable traceability and strengthen trust in the data. The introduction of data governance requires strategic, organizational and technological measures. It is necessary to establish both a data strategy and a data policy within the company. In addition, responsibilities must be defined, existing processes analyzed and documented and software solutions evaluated in order to adapt their use to the specific requirements. An important prerequisite for the successful implementation of data governance is a clearly structured implementation plan and a consistent training concept. The active involvement of all stakeholders, including management, is important to ensure the sustainable implementation of all measures. In summary, data governance not only contributes to compliance with legal requirements, but also to cost savings, improved decision-making and better collaboration between specialist departments and IT.
