The master's thesis entitled “It is NOT a man's world- Gender relations at management levels in social work” examines gender equality in management positions in the social sector in Austria. It is divided into a theoretical part, which highlights individual, organizational, and societal aspects, and an empirical part, which is based on a quantitative online survey with a sample of 523 social work professionals. The study analyzes personal attitudes and opinions on taking on leadership roles, identifies facilitating and inhibiting factors, and highlights gender-specific differences in order to formulate recommendations for greater gender equality. The most important findings and suggestions concern the dismantling of gender stereotypes, monitoring and making gender relations and inequalities transparent at various levels. Consequently, organizational development that takes gender-sensitive concepts into account is recommended in order to promote an open understanding of leadership. Last but not least, interested parties should take advantage of support approaches and “take action”.
