Abstract

In an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, intercultural communication and counseling is a central task of social work. Social workers are confronted with people from different cultures and environments on a daily basis. Counseling presents a number of challenges that must be taken into account. Furthermore, counseling sessions are often used in social work as a means of supporting people in difficult life situations. It is important that counselors adapt to the individual needs of those seeking advice. This is especially true for people from different countries who have different cultural values and norms. This research is dedicated to the specific cultural factors and needs that influence counseling practice in social work when working with people from different countries. The main focus of this work is the misunderstandings and challenges that can arise in the counseling context. In the field of intercultural communication, there is a range of specialist literature that analyzes various challenges of intercultural counseling situations. A qualitative approach was chosen for this work in order to gain a deep understanding of intercultural communication in social work. The guided interviews with six social consultants from Upper Austria formed the central instrument of data collection. This method made it possible to record the subjective experiences and perspectives of the respondents in detail. This master's thesis aims to bring both perspectives together and examine the usefulness of the theoretical concepts for the practice of social work.
