The Austrian population is becoming increasingly older, which is why more qualified nursing staff will be needed in the future to be able to look after and care for people with support and care needs at the usual level of quality. The current supply of nursing staff will no longer be sufficient to meet the need for nursing staff. One measure to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in nursing is to recruit nursing staff from abroad. The integration of international nursing staff requires great effort from everyone involved and brings with it one or two hurdles that must first be overcome. Language barriers, differences in professional understanding, lack of recognition of professional skills, exclusion and discrimination are mentioned as serious obstacles in the context of the integration of international nursing staff. The reason for conflicts is often seen in the multicultural composition of teams. In order to successfully and sustainably integrate international nursing staff into teams, in addition to targeted onboarding measures that take cultural differences into account, activities and approaches are also needed that make companies and teams fit to deal with cultural diversity. The promotion of intercultural competence, the support of multicultural nursing teams in their collaboration and the handling of conflicts supports international nursing staff and existing nursing teams in the integration process. Not only does the integration of international nursing staff work better, but by addressing issues such as promoting intercultural competence or diversity management, companies have the opportunity to benefit long-term and sustainably from the implementation of these measures and concepts.
