This Master's thesis addresses the issue of child neglect and the resulting challenges and intervention possibilities within the field of social work. The central question is how neglect can be identified, distinguished from other phenomena such as laissez-faire parenting styles, and prevented through early intervention. In addition to a theoretical examination of the causes, forms, and consequences of neglect, the study includes an empirical investigation based on qualitative interviews with social workers. The findings reveal a growing prevalence of emotional neglect and so-called “affluent neglect.” A rising concern is the influence of digital media: many children spend a striking amount of time using digital devices, which often indicates a lack of parental care and emotional attention. The resulting social isolation and insufficient media literacy further exacerbate the effects of neglect. The early detection of neglected children remains a major challenge, as neglect tends to occur gradually and is not immediately visible. Successful intervention requires preventive measures, the establishment of stable relationships, and the strengthening of family resources. An essential component of effective prevention is therefore the close cooperation and targeted training of professionals such as teachers, early childhood educators, and other key figures in the children's social environment. Only through professional awareness and coordinated intervention can neglect be identified and counteracted at an early stage. This thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the issue and highlights the vital role of social work in child protection.
