In recent years, trans* and inter* activism has brought about numerous positive legal changes for trans* and inter* individuals. However, non-binary people remain legally unrecognized in Austria. Trans*, inter*, and non-binary individuals are still experiencing different forms of violence, discrimination, and exclusion within the heteronormative society. This master’s thesis first addresses this issue on a theoretical level, thereby focusing on the influence of heteronormativity in society. The empirical part of the study investigates the experiences of violence, discrimination, and exclusion among interviewed trans* individuals, some of whom identify as non-binary, living in Salzburg, using qualitative research methods, such as qualitative interviews. Furthermore, the work analyzes the efforts of local institutions, initiatives and networks in Salzburg concentrating on primary prevention of trans*hostile acts and attitudes and the dismantling of taboos. Finally, it outlines the needs expressed by the interviewed persons and institutions and analyzes support services and safe spaces that are described during the interviews.
