Abstract

The topic of climate and environmental protection is becoming increasingly important in the logistics chain. Inland navigation, as part of the transport sector, is also affected by this problem. The combustion of fossil fuels in inland navigation and the associated greenhouse gas emissions pose a problem for our society and the environment. This master's thesis deals with potential solutions to counteract CO2-emissions. It is divided into six chapters and is intended to show which measures can be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in inland navigation. In the course of the work, it will be worked out which current measures, guidelines, regulations and initiatives in inland navigation can play a role in reducing emissions, as well as which financial incentives and funding programs are available to support the achievement of the goals. First, inland navigation is explained in general and information is given about the EU climate targets with regard to greenhouse gas emissions. The different strategies, plans and goals of the EU and national and international politics are then taken up and explained in detail. In doing so, concrete solutions such as different propulsion fuels, legal aspects, but also digitization measures, operational approaches and funding are examined in more detail, as well as current and planned projects and measures. In order to show which measures are the most effective and sensible, the possible emission-reducing measures were finally evaluated using a focus group and, with the knowledge and opinions of the experts, a potential further course of action was recommended with regard to the CO2-reducing options. This approach includes a necessary and uniform decision on the direction of the type of propulsion fuel, with methanol, LNG, hydrogen and biofuels being considered the most likely alternatives. In support of a specified propulsion fuel, digitization measures and the infrastructure expansion of a landbased power supply can also be further advanced. In order to further develop all kinds of measures and to achieve the set climate goals, fair political and legal frameworks and standards must also be created.
