    Abstract

The digitisation of industrial processes is increasingly presenting medium-sized companies with the challenge of designing their production systems to be efficient and future-proof. In this context, the introduction of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) as part of business software is becoming increasingly important. This master's thesis deals with the success factors and challenges involved in implementing an MES system in woodworking companies. The aim of this thesis is to develop a practical guide that provides structured support to companies in this industry during the implementation of MES. Based on a theoretical analysis of relevant literature, the thesis first presents the basic concepts, functions and standards of MES systems. It also addresses the specific requirements of medium-sized woodworking companies, such as a high degree of product variety, material-specific fluctuations and limited human resources. The role of project management and suitable process models for system implementation will also be systematically discussed. A qualitative research design was chosen to provide an empirical basis for the work. In several guided expert interviews with stakeholders from the woodworking industry, practical insights were gained into the challenges, success factors and proven strategies for MES implementation. The evaluation was carried out using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. The results show that economic aspects (such as investment costs and ROI), organisational conditions (such as acceptance and change management) and technical factors (such as system integration and real-time capability) are key factors influencing the success of MES implementation. Based on the theoretical and empirical results, a structured guide was developed that systematically takes the identified influencing factors into account. It offers concrete recommendations for action for the planning, implementation and follow-up of an MES implementation in medium-sized companies. The guide is divided into different phases and refers to critical success factors throughout the entire project.
