Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Swiss Medical Assessment System (SMASS) in emergency medical services. At a time when demographic changes and the increasing complexity of emergency care pose significant challenges to emergency services, process management in healthcare is becoming increasingly important. Rural areas often struggle with longer response times and a shortage of qualified personnel, while differing structures and funding models across the various states can lead to significant differences in processes. In addition to an extensive literature review, expert interviews were also conducted as part of the methodology. The analysis focuses on identifying key factors that determine the success of the implementation, as well as on assessing potential risks and challenges that may arise during the implementation process. This study demonstrates that the implementation of SMASS in the emergency medical services of Upper Austria represents not only a technical but also a strategic challenge, requiring close collaboration among all involved stakeholders. Only through a holistic approach and consideration of regional specifics can the introduction of such a system be successful and provide real added value to emergency care.
