Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

The following master's thesis is an empirical study in the field of social work, focusing on the care of unaccompanied minor refugees. Using the example of a child and youth welfare facility for unaccompanied minor refugees, areas of tension were identified based on the care concept and the guidelines of child and youth welfare and were discussed using both theory and practice. A comprehensive theoretical section provides an overview of the current asylum system in Austria. The data were analysed using a qualitative case study. Subsequently, the evaluated data were interpreted using case examples, as well as theory and practical experience. By comparing the guidelines of child and youth welfare and the Austrian legal framework with practical experiences, interesting findings were captured. Significant discrepancies from the guidelines were particularly identified in education, employment, mental health and housing. The thesis concludes with suggestions on how future care concepts could be designed, or which structures would need to change to adequately support unaccompanied minor refugees.
