In this master’s thesis, the topic of ageism (age-based discrimination) is examined. The thesis addresses the foundations of ageism, the experiences of discrimination among people over 60, as well as strategies for coping and prevention. Older people often experience discrimination, which has a negative impact on their lives. The central task of social work is to accompany people in challenging life situations and to promote their participation in society. Therefore, it is the responsibility of social work to address this issue and support those affected. The aim of the thesis was to explore how ageism affects people over 60 and how it can be addressed within the context of social work. For this purpose, relevant literature was analyzed and an empirical study was conducted. Six qualitative interviews with people over 60 were evaluated using qualitative content analysis. The results show that ageism occurs on personal, societal, and institutional levels, particularly in the areas of employment, healthcare, and retail and services. Coping and prevention require approaches at the individual, societal, and institutional levels: reflection on personal stereotypes and sensitization of professionals, more support services, awareness-raising and intergenerational projects, as well as a strengthening of political social work. The thesis thus contributes to the discussion on ageism and emphasizes the need, in line with the mission of social work, to implement measures that promote equality in old age.
