    Abstract

In an increasingly digitalised world, individuals benefit from the advantages and potential uses of digital technologies. Examples include global communication in real time, online shopping and information research. Nevertheless, there are also negative aspects to these diverse potentials. These include anxiety, overload, dependencies, stress and even burnout. In this context, the concept of digital detoxing is becoming increasingly important. The term refers to a deliberate temporary renunciation of digital technologies in order to promote personal well-being and a balanced relationship with technology. Nevertheless, the literature argues that further research is needed in the field of digital detox. This thesis attempts to make a contribution to research in this area as part of a two-stage research methodology. In a first step, a thematic literature analysis is carried out as a central basis so that topics in the field of empirical research on digital detox can be identified. On this basis, a field study will then be conducted as part of a more comprehensive empirical study on the topic of digital detox. As part of the field study, the participants will each spend one normal day and one day as digital detox. Qualitative and quantitative data is combined with cardiovascular measurements so that a deeper understanding can be achieved. It should be emphasised that the focus of this master's thesis is on the qualitative data collected through interviews and diaries. Of particular interest is the investigation of motives for and against the implementation of a digital detox as well as those measures that are carried out during abstinence. A large number of findings in the field of digital detox can be identified in this thesis. A key finding of this master's thesis is that the primary motive for abstinence is intrinsic motivation. In addition, a contribution to mental well-being, a perceived overuse of digital technologies and social interactions are motives for a digital detox. Nevertheless, the withdrawal from digital technology and the associated functionalities can be cited as a motive against a digital abstinence. Emotions can also influence the individual during a digital detox. These include the fear of missing out or insecurity and boredom. Nevertheless, it is important to emphasise that this study showed that a variety of measures are used during abstinence to pass the time gained. These include, for example, spending time with family and friends, household management and organisation, as well as reading, exercise and sport.
