Abstract

In an increasingly globalized and digitalized world, virtual teams are being used more frequently. This leads to specific challenges in the management of these teams. Traditional leadership methods sometimes reach their limits in virtual environments, which is the reason for focusing on alternative approaches. This master's thesis examines the influence of the manager on trust within virtual teams. Lean leadership is presented as a possible leadership style for virtual teams and Hoshin Kanri is examined as a lean leadership method to increase performance. First, a theoretical basis is established in the areas of virtual teams, leadership, lean leadership and Hoshin Kanri. An iterative literature review was carried out to answer the research questions. Using this methodology, 31 relevant scientific studies were identified, analyzed and integrated into the thesis. The iterative approach offered the opportunity to combine the existing research bases on various topics. This allowed new findings to be added to the research areas. The results of the research show that managers play a central role in building and maintaining trust in virtual teams. In particular, regular and transparent communication and the promotion of an open feedback culture are crucial. Lean leadership proves to be a promising approach to leading virtual teams. The principles of lean, such as continuous improvement and employee involvement, help to increase motivation and commitment in virtual working environment. It has also been found that Hoshin Kanri can improve the performance of virtual teams. It enables a clear definition of strategic goals and systematic monitoring of the implementation of those goals. The combination of long-term planning and daily target tracking promotes a way of working that is particularly beneficial in virtual teams. In summary, the results show that the application of lean leadership and the integration of Hoshin Kanri are suitable for virtual teams. They enable a strengthening of trust and contribute to a sustainable increase in team performance.
