Abstract

Sustainable development represents one of the greatest challenges and, at the same time, opportunities for companies in the 21st century. In light of global environmental issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss, it is essential for companies to realign their business models with ecological, social, and economic criteria in mind. This necessity is further heightened by increasing regulatory pressure as well as growing awareness and corresponding demands from consumers. Companies must design their processes to be both sustainable and economically efficient to secure their long-term competitiveness. The methodology of this work is based on a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. This includes, on the one hand, case studies of companies considered pioneers in sustainability, and on the other hand, the analysis of sustainability reports to gain broad-based insights. The methodological framework allows for an understanding of implementation strategies and the resulting operational changes. The analysis results show that integrating sustainability into process management offers extensive benefits for companies, including increased operational efficiency, cost savings through optimized resource use, and improved compliance with environmental regulations. Additionally, a strong commitment to sustainability positively influences brand perception and strengthens stakeholder trust. However, challenges exist in overcoming internal resistance, adapting existing processes and systems, and measuring and quantifying sustainability initiatives. The work demonstrates that the analyzed ATX companies pursue a clear strategic direction that integrates sustainability into the corporate culture and is supported by leadership engagement. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of transparent communication and the involvement of all stakeholders to achieve and secure sustainability goals in the long term.
