In the fact of the increasing challenges of climate change and increasing social expectations, it is essential for companies to integrate sustainability into their corporate strategy. Recent legal developments, particularly the introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in Europe, present companies with new challenges, but at the same time offer opportunities in the area of sustainability reporting. The aim of this paper is to examine the associated demands on controlling and to shed light on its role in the successful implementation of sustainability reporting. At the beginning of the paper, the basic problem and objectives are described. This is followed by the definition of relevant terms for further elaboration. In the following chapter, the challenges and opportunities for controlling are discussed and the most important findings are presented in the form of a SWAT-analysis. This is followed by an analytical discussion of the various views in the professional literature and a derivation of practical recommendations for companies. Finally existing limitations and the need of future research are explained. To answer the research question, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on the topics CSRD, sustainability and controlling. The analysis shows that ESG reporting is highly relevant for companies in terms of stakeholder expectations and regulatory developments. The literature suggests that the improving of sustainability reporting is associated with enhanced corporate performance. However, the exact causes of this correlation have not yet been conclusively determined. A comprehensive risk assessment including ESG factors is an efficient tool for minimizing potential risks, thereby achieve improved strategic alignment and increasing stakeholder trust. Companies should consider sustainability reporting as a tool to ensure long-term competitiveness and strengthen stakeholder trust. The materiality analysis is seen as an essential step in identifying relevant interest groups and their concerns. The successful implementation of sustainability reporting requires a holistic concept that encompasses all areas of a company. This means that sustainability should never be seen as an individual task but as an integrated part of the company’s strategy and culture. Controlling takes an important role in this process, as it not only promotes and monitors the company’s financial performance, but also supports the implementation of sustainability goals and measures.
