Abstract

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are ever-present in the lives of young adults and have become an integral part of their lives. These platforms are exposing young adults to increasingly unrealistic beauty ideals and non-diverse representations of body images. In light of these concerns, this study aims to examine young adults' use. This master's thesis explores the potential impact of TikTok and Instagram on the body image of young adults, with a focus on eating and sports behaviour as well as role models. Preventive measures to promote responsible use of social media and improve body image are also discussed. The results of the literature review provide initial findings and form the basis for the quantitative research in this master’s thesis. An empirical study of 192 young adults using an online questionnaire found that Instagram was used more frequently than TikTok, which tends to appeal to younger adults. The majority of participants exhibit passive usage behavior, preferring to view other users' content rather than producing their own posts. The impact of social media on eating and exercise habits is especially noticeable among individuals who frequently compare themselves to others on these platforms. Additionally, those who use social media frequently often express a desire to alter their weight or appearance. These findings underscore the need for preventative measures to promote responsible social media use and improve body image. Together, we can all contribute by promoting a responsible use of social media and improving our own body image. This can be achieved through the platforms themselves, such as making labelling mandatory, and through educational institutions by offering media education. Additionally, everyone can make a conscious effort to consume media more mindfully.
