Abstract

This thesis explores how different project management methods and software implementation strategies influence the successful implementation of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in manufacturing organizations. The motivation behind this research stems from the challenges organizations face when implementing an MES, including the complexity of existing systems and the need to develop effective implementation strategies. The thesis aims to answer questions about which project management methods and software implementation strategies have proven to be particularly effective in MES implementation. It also examines how these methods and strategies influence the implementation process and which criteria are decisive for successful implementation. The paper begins by explaining the importance of business software and MES systems. It then describes various project management methods, including classic, agile, and hybrid approaches, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, it analyzes and evaluates different software implementation strategies, such as the big bang approach and iterative approaches. The methodology includes a detailed literature review and case studies to compare the theoretical findings with practical experience. It uses primary and secondary sources to illustrate the success factors and challenges of MES implementation comprehensively. The concrete results of the work show that agile and hybrid project management methods are particularly effective in MES implementation due to their flexibility and adaptability. Iterative software implementation strategies have proven to be advantageous as they enable step-by-step integration and minimize risks. Comprehensive change management measures, continuous training, and close involvement of all stakeholders are also crucial for a successful MES implementation. In conclusion, the combination of iterative implementation strategies and agile project management methods creates the best conditions for a successful MES implementation. Future research should focus on the further development of hybrid approaches and customization to specific company requirements to further increase the efficiency and effectiveness of MES implementation.
