This master's thesis deals with the topic of “Democratic awareness in a religious context” and examines the role of Islamic organizations in shaping the political views of young people. The thesis begins with a theoretical discussion of the topics of democracy, Islam, Islamic associations and Islamist movements. The focus is then placed on youth social work. In the empirical study, social workers from this field are interviewed on the given topic. The results show that Islam plays a central role for many young people. In particular, it serves as orientation and offers a community structure. Islamic associations such as ATIB take on not only religious but also social functions. With regard to the teaching of democratic values, there are differences both in the regional circumstances and in the people in charge. While democratic values are conveyed, conservative role models exist at the same time, particularly with regard to gender relations. Islamist extremism is described by social workers as a marginal phenomenon. Contacts with Islamist movements are usually only of short duration and do not usually manifest themselves. These encounters, in turn, often lead to more intense democratic conflicts between young people and social workers.
