In light of the increasing importance of data in the coming years and the growing focus on Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI), this Master’s thesis aims to demonstrate how Data Governance measures can mitigate risks associated with the use of SSBI in management reporting. The outcome is a practical guideline designed to assist managers and executives in implementing effective Data Governance strategies for SSBI within their organizations. To address the research question, a systematic literature review was conducted. This review elucidates the concept of SSBI, its application in management reporting, and the opportunities and risks it creates. Additionally, the review identifies the necessary skills for SSBI users and outlines the fundamental tasks and organizational aspects of Data Governance in the context of SSBI deployment in companies. The insights gained from the literature review on SSBI and Data Governance were further validated and enforced through a qualitative online survey conducted via Microsoft Teams. Sixty managers and executives participated in this survey, responding to sixteen questions. Both the literature review and survey results indicate that the risks associated with SSBI can largely be minimized through appropriate Data Governance measures. The essential actions to mitigate • user-related risks, • quality assurance risks of analyses and • data provision risks for SSBI are consolidated into a practical Data Governance guideline. The survey revealed that most companies currently lack Data Governance in the SSBI domain. Therefore, the guideline also addresses the introduction of Change Management, the development of a Data Governance strategy, and the evaluation of the current status of SSBI within the organization.
