Abstract

The migration of standard ERP systems is a considerable challenge for companies. Studies show that 25 percent of ERP installations exceed initial costs and around 20 percent of projects are not completed. The need to meet specific business requirements with limited resources further complicates the migration process. This master's thesis is dedicated to exploring effective project management strategies to overcome these challenges. Given the complex nature of such migrations, choosing the right project management approach is crucial. The structure of the thesis includes a detailed analysis of existing literature on project management methods for software migrations. Through an extensive literature review, classic, agile and hybrid approaches were examined to determine which methodology is best suited to the specific requirements and risks of ERP migration projects. A particular focus was placed on the critical success factors and the question of how these can be addressed by different management approaches. The research results show that hybrid and classic plan-driven approaches are particularly well suited to meet the needs of ERP migration projects. These approaches enable an effective balance between flexibility and structured planning, which is crucial for managing the dynamics and specific requirements of these projects. Purely agile methods were identified as less suitable, as they often do not sufficiently meet the extensive stability requirements and planning needs. Based on these findings, a practice-oriented guide was developed to help companies select the optimal project management approach for their specific situation in order to improve the chances of success of ERP system migrations and make informed strategic decisions.
