Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

Current challenges, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, have demonstrated the importance of well-organized and resilient logistics in military contexts. The motivation behind this master's thesis lies in the need to modernize and enhance the efficiency of the military logistics of the Austrian Armed Forces. The military logistics of the Austrian Armed Forces faces the challenge of optimizing its processes to meet the growing demands for flexibility and efficiency. Against this backdrop, this thesis explores how the Supply Chain Operations Reference - Digital Standard model (SCOR-DS model) can be implemented in the military logistics of the Austrian Armed Forces to address these challenges. This thesis starts with a theoretical introduction to the SCOR-DS model, followed by a systematic literature review that examines existing research on the SCOR and SCOR-DS models and their application in military and civilian contexts. The analysis aims to assess the suitability of the model for the specific requirements of military logistics. The methodological approach of this thesis is based on a combination of systematic literature review and qualitative methods. The literature review was conducted following the approach of Tranfield, Denyer, et al., to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the existing research. The qualitative data were collected through expert interviews and analyzed using Philipp Mayring's method of qualitative content analysis. The findings of this thesis indicate that the SCOR-DS model holds significant potential for optimizing military logistics within the Austrian Armed Forces. Standardization of processes, improvement of supply chain transparency, risk management, utilization of best practices, and the integration of new technologies are highlighted as key themes. In summary, the SCOR-DS model is presented as a promising solution for modernizing the military logistics of the Austrian Armed Forces. This thesis provides a broad implementation concept that supports the application of the model in a military context. It emphasizes that successful implementation requires not only technical expertise but also close collaboration among all stakeholders and continuous adaptation to changing conditions. The results of this master's thesis can also serve as a guide for other humanitarian or operational organizations seeking to implement the SCOR-DS model.
