The following paper analyses the potential and challenges of e-learning in the context of in-house training. The primary objective is to highlight the contribution that e-learning formats can make to the skills development of employees. In this context, a further objective is to identify the factors that promote or even hinder successful implementation. The study is based on a comprehensive review of relevant scientific publications and practical studies. It is a theory-based approach that systematically compares existing findings in the literature and adapts them to the corporate context. The focus is on the three defined research questions. These are the suitability of different e-learning methods for heterogeneous target groups, the relevance of didactic principles for learning success, and the potential and challenges arising from the use of e-learning. The analysis shows that formats such as microlearning, gamification and virtual classrooms are significantly suitable. This is due to the promotion of motivation, possible interaction and efficient practical transfer. There are visible differences between the two target groups. Younger employees prefer mobile and flexible learning opportunities, while older employees benefit from practical and structured formats. The didactic success factors that prove to be decisive for sustainable learning success are personalised learning paths, precisely defined learning objectives, continuous feedback and a targeted transfer orientation. Time and location independence, scalability and increased efficiency are emerging as fundamental potentials. These enable companies to make their continuing education more resource-efficient, disseminate specialist knowledge more efficiently and strengthen their employer brand. At the same time, challenges are to be expected. These include inadequate technical infrastructure, limited acceptance by employees and the limitations of self-directed learning. The results lead to the conclusion that, when implemented appropriately, e-learning is an effective tool for internal corporate training. It is important to embed this approach strategically within the company, going beyond the mere provision of e-learning platforms. This requires a corporate culture that promotes learning, reliable technical conditions and sound didactic preparation. If these conditions are met, e-learning can make a significant contribution to securing skilled workers, promoting lifelong learning and enhancing the competitiveness of companies.
