Abstract

Advancing digitalization and the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated the acceptance of mobile payment methods worldwide. While countries such as China have a high adoption rate for mobile payments, Austria shows a strong preference for cash, with 78% of the population preferring cash to other payment methods. This paper investigates which demographic factors influence the acceptance of mobile payment methods in Austria and whether these preferences can be explained by a combination of demographic and psychological factors. The work is based on a literary analysis of traditional and modern payment methods as well as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and its extensions. A central element of the methodology is an empirical approach, which was implemented using a quantitative questionnaire. In addition to demographic data, the questionnaire captures participants' attitudes towards mobile payment methods, including perceived usefulness, ease of use and technical affinity. The results of the study show that the level of education is a significant predictor for the acceptance of mobile payment methods. People with a higher level of education are more inclined to use mobile payment technologies. Other demographic factors such as age, gender and income do not show significant correlations with the adoption of mobile payment methods, indicating that these variables alone are not sufficient to fully explain adoption. Furthermore, the analyses confirmed the relevance of psychological factors. People with high technical affinity perceive mobile payment methods as more useful and user-friendly, which increases their acceptance and usage. In summary, this study shows that the acceptance of mobile payment methods in Austria is a multilayered phenomenon that cannot be explained by demographic factors alone. Rather, it requires a comprehensive consideration of psychological, technical and situational influences in order to develop effective strategies to promote the use of mobile payment systems. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the adoption of mobile payment methods and provide valuable insights for the design of future research and practical applications in the field of digital payment systems.
