    Abstract

Art is subject to its medium. In the case of video games, the visuals were once bound by technical constraints and hardware limitations, resulting in simplistic sprites with restricted animations in favour of memory space and responsive controls. As technology advanced, these restrictions loosened significantly, allowing for fluid motion and colourful graphics to take root. As the line between video games and animation continues to blur, it becomes important to understand how to transfer characteristics and qualities of one medium to another. In this thesis, a study of three video games and their adaptations into the animated medium has been conducted based on their visual differences and similarities, as well as their comparative use of animation principles. The resulting collective and individual patterns are applied and described in the practical case study Half-Life: Alex.
