This paper presents results of two empirical studies conducted as part of the research project «Working at Home for School (WHS)». Study 1 focused on the prevalence rates of tutoring, in particular paid tutoring. The sample consisted of 456 students from Hauptschule and Gymnasium from grades 5 to 11. Results showed a prevalence rate in paid tutoring of 21 percent and no differences between Hauptschule and Gymnasium. In the second study 348 students from Hauptschule and Gymnasium from grades 6 to 7 participated. Here, the focus was on motives for and the contents of tutoring. To get better grades is the main motive for paid tutoring. During tutoring the highest amount of time is used to prepare for tests. Application of cluster analytic procedures identified three types concerning motivational variables, intelligence, and school achievement. Differences in prevalence rates of tutoring were observed between those types.
