Abstract
The present article examines the reasons why counselling relationships might go wrong and consequently be discontinued. A qualitative study has drawn attention to the fact that, at the beginning of any counselling relationship, it is important to carefully consider the goal of the therapeutic endeavour and the terms of the relationship. In addition, presumptions concerning the problem at hand and possible solutions play an important role on both the client and the counsellor side. Achieving clarity concerning the counselling contract is vital for a stable counselling relationship and, ultimately, for therapeutic success. A client´s willingness to change is heavily dependent on stable terms and a trusting relationship with supporting systems.
