Abstract
Using a coating facility based on a new approach, it is possible to process components using a combined treatment of plasma nitriding and hard-coating. The primary function of the nitriding is to harden the component to allow it to resist deformation., in order that the subsequently applied hard coating will not break up as a result of such deformation. The multilayer coatings are based on alternating layers of titanium carbide, nitride and carbonitride. The number of such layers lies between 3 and 27. A component treated and coated in this way shows a significantly greater wear resistance than its conventionally hard-coated analogue.
