Abstract

Connected and automated driving systems and their connection to intelligent transport systems (ITS) represent a new phase in the development of networked systems due to their complexity. Networked systems offer advantages such as flexibility, scalability, reliability, and efficiency and are already being used in various areas, e.g., in building automation and smart grids.

Co-operative ITS (C-ITS) is based on communication and information exchange between vehicles, road users, and the transport infrastructure. Two important use cases are: Signal Phase and Timing Information and Collective Perception. They are an essential building block on the way to future highly automated driving functions, the classification of which is based on the SAE level. Connected and automated transport systems have the potential to make mobility safer, more efficient in terms of traffic and more sustainable in terms of environmental impact. However, the implementation of these systems requires a joint effort by all stakeholders from academia, industry and users and the solution of technical, organizational, and economic challenges.
