Abstract
Public lighting in urban environments accounts for about 50% of the electricity consumption in cities, according to the Digital Agenda for Europe's report “Lighting the Cities.” Innovative measures are required to reduce the carbon footprint and cost of lighting in urban environments. A promising solution is traffic-adaptive control of light-emitting diode (LED)-based streetlights, which adjust the level of luminance intensity based on traffic volume. This solution yields significant energy savings without compromising traffic safety.
