Abstract

The applicability of strain gauges for strain measurement on belt conveyors was discussed. The belt's lateral movement due to a skewed cylindrical pulley as well as due to a conical pulley was investigated. The strain distribution prevailing along the belt's axis due to a conical pulley was measured, taking into account the stiffening effect of the strain gauge. Results showed that strain gauges could not be applied to belt conveyors without previous calibration of the regarded measurement set-up.
