Abstract

In the early 1990s the iron and steer industry was placed under considerable pressure by the respective authorities and green parties to dramatically reduce the Level of dioxins and other harmful emissions. At that time VAI commenced with the development of a new-generation offgas cleaning system for sinter plants and investigated innovative offgas-cleaning solutions for electric arc furnaces (EAF) as well. One objective of these activities was to develop a system which - in comparison with conventional systems - would not only more efficiently remove dust from the offgas stream, but which would also be capable of efficiently removing dioxins and other undesirable substances. The outcome of these efforts were systems which featured a dioxin-removal efficiency of 80 to 99%. This represents a dioxin clean-gas concentration from below 0.1 ng l-TEQ to 0.4 ng l-TEQ.
