Selbstbewertung der digitalen Reife im Krankenhaus – Vorgehensmodell für die digitale Transformation in österreichischen Krankenhäusern

Objective

The Austrian hospital system is subject to increasing pressure for change and the need for innovation. The shortage of skilled workers and the increase in demand determine the system and process design in the hospital. Digitalization and digital transformation are key levers for improving processes and results in hospitals. In this regard, the question arises: How can hospital-specific digital maturity and transformation in hospitals be identified and promoted using self-assessment and conceptual development?

Method

The current digital maturity of an Austrian hospital was determined and interpreted based on a semi-structured literature research and with the help of a cross-professional online survey among the employees of the hospital (N=1089, n=164, rr=15.1%). Possible levers for digital transformation in the hospital were identified and analysed using an interdisciplinary expert workshop (n=20).

Results

The results illustrate the great importance of digitalization and digital transformation for the different professions and actors in the hospital. It can also be seen that digital maturity is less developed in areas close to patients than in areas remote from patients. With regard to possible solutions and areas of action to improve digitalization in hospitals, the focus from the employees' perspective is, on the one hand, on an overarching digitalization strategy and, on the other hand, on increased professional digital exchange. Strengthening employee acceptance and training in digital skills are seen as further need for action.

Conclusions

The current changes in terms of range of services, availability of resources and of the patient behaviour require from decision-makers as well as hospital employees to be more willing to change. In addition to being open to interdisciplinary cooperation and hybrid human machine teaming, it is important to transparently collect and clearly communicate the added value and effects of digitalization and digital transformation.
