Abstract

This paper is concerned with the open-loop control of the static lind dynamic stability of a piezolaminated simply supported beamt which is subjected 10 an axial compressive fo rce. In literature, an erroneous derivation of thc equations of motion and regions of instability hus recently becn presented. Tbc scope of Ihis contribution is a c1arification of the problem. Utilizing D'Alemberl's principle, the equations of motion are derivcd based on the model of an inextensi ble BemoullitextperiodcenteredEuler-v.Karman beam, where the piezoelcctric actuation is formulatcd in tenns of eigenstrain. The regions of Slatic and dynamic instability are determincd in dependency of piezoelcclric actuation. For the static case, the results are verificd by means of fini te element computations using ABAQUS.
