Abstract

According to the world wide survey by Brookfield, 20% of the expatriates in the year 2009 were women and today 24% of the senior management positions are covered by women. The fact that these percentages have steadily increased during the last few decades shows that the importance of this subject rises and in the light of this notion this paper can contribute to this field of research. The aim of the paper is to create an overview of the topic women as global leaders and women as expatriates and to pinpoint the linkage between these two conceptions. This paper functions as an analysis of the available literature and in the light of this study empirical research can be conducted. The work is based on the theoretical and empirical research on women expatriates and women as global leaders/ (senior) managers. The aim of this paper is to create an overview of the existing dogma and facts concerning the topic of women in management positions and women expatriates. In this paper the link between the scarcity of women in global management positions and women expatriates will be presented and the possible advantages of women in management positions will be emphasized. The key contribution will be to evaluate the current situation of women related both to expatriate assignments and management positions and discuss the possible advantages of women in management positions. This paper does not have the purpose of marketing women. With the number of women expatriates growing, this paper can serve as a contribution to the existing literature, and can function as a basis for further empirical research.
